Resident or nonresident? Annual or short-term?

  • Residents pay the lowest annual price; nonresidents are always welcome but pay more. If you're visiting, most states sell 1-day to week-long licenses that cost far less than an annual one.
  • Fish more than a few times a year? An annual license usually pays for itself quickly.
  • Age matters: children fish free in most states (the cutoff varies — under 17 in Texas, under 16 in many others), and seniors often qualify for reduced fees.

Stamps, validations, and report cards

  • The base license isn't always the whole cost. Colorado requires a Habitat Stamp with your first license purchase each season; California requires report cards for steelhead, sturgeon, and salmon, plus a validation to fish a second rod in inland waters.
  • Saltwater, trout, and other special fisheries often carry their own endorsements, depending on the state.

Why states ask for your SSN — and when licenses expire

  • Federal child-support enforcement law requires states to collect a Social Security number with recreational license applications. Where a state requires it, we transmit it encrypted and mask it everywhere except the application itself.
  • License years aren't always calendar years: most Texas annual licenses expire August 31 no matter when you buy, and Colorado's season runs March 1 through the following March 31.

Is my Social Security number safe?

Some states require an SSN by law for fishing-license applicants. When a state requires it, we collect it over an encrypted connection, mask it everywhere (our admin notifications and logs only ever show the last four digits, e.g. ***-**-6789), and use it solely to complete your license purchase on the official state portal. How fast will I get my license?

Delivery timing depends on the state's system — many licenses are issued almost immediately and are emailed to you as soon as the state generates them.
